چکیده

Essential blepharospasm is a focal dystonia characterized by the involuntary and obliged closure of the eyes secondary to the contraction of the orbicular muscle and/or a dysfunction of the upper eyelid elevator muscle. The etiology of blepharospasm, which is more frequent in women between the fifth and seventh decade of life, is as yet unknown. Its diagnosis requires an in-depth ophthalmological and neurological assessment to discard alterations of the ocular surface or neurological alterations such as the Meige syndrome and other dystonia−and/or side effects of anti-Parkinson drugs or substitute hormonal therapy.1 Even though blepharospasm is difficult to control, botulin toxin injection in the orbicular and frontal muscles remains the gold standard for treatment. The main limitations of this treatment are the short duration of the effect (between 3 and 4 months), its progressive tolerance that requires increasing the frequency of injections and their dosage, without forgetting the invalidating side effects−ptosis, headache, etc. Myopexia of the orbicular to the frontal bone and myomectomy of the orbicular–with or without anchoring the upper eyelid elevator with tarsal straps–are supplementary techniques exhibiting highly variable efficacy andwhichmerely provide a partial solution to the problem.2 Neuromuscular taping (Kinesio® taping) is a functional therapy widely utilized by physiotherapists and rehabilitation physicians for treating muscular spasticity in patients with infantile brain palsy and for rehabilitating ischemic cerebrovascular accident sequels. Special bandages in the shape of adhesive tapes are placed over the area to be treated. They have pain killing and anti-inflammatory effects, improving perception and acting on muscular tone.3 We have treated three patients (two females, one male) with essential
